Dozens Dead After Congo Plane Crash

At least 33 people have been killed after a passenger plane crashed into a residential area in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Hewa Bora Airways McDonnell Douglas DC-9 ploughed into the market district of Birere in the town of Goma after bad weather forced the pilot to abort take-off.
Government spokesman Esdras Kambale said in a national TV broadcast that 33 people were killed and 80 injured in the crash.
A local governor and the Congolese Red Cross had initially reported only six survivors and more than 70 dead.

But Dirk Cramers, marketing director of Hewa Bora, said the majority of the 79 passengers aboard the plane had survived.
"With the help of the UN, we were able to pull out almost all of the passengers before it ignited," Cramers said.
The seven crew members had also survived, he added.
Birere is located just beyond the runway, which used to continue

into the neighbourhood but was partially destroyed by lava from a volcanic eruption in 2002.
Democratic Republic of Congo has one of the world's worst aviation safety records.
There were eight plane crashes in the country last year, including one in the capital Kinshasa which killed more than 50 people.
